Historical Background / Description:
The Central Jama Masjid on Main Street, New Amsterdam, was declared opened by the late President Dr. Cheddi Jagan in 1995. The first masjid was erected in 1935 as a flat wooden structure. This two-storey concrete masjid illustrates features of Islamic religious architecture in the form of its centrally positioned bulbous dome and large minaret at the side of the building which dominates the façade. It is a representation of the eastern influences in Guyana.
