Historical Background / Description:

Dr. Walter Rodney was among Guyana’s most distinguished academics and politicians. He was born on March 23, 1942, and died tragically when a bomb exploded in his vehicle on June 13, 1980. Dr. Rodney returned to the country in 1979 after studying in the Caribbean and Africa and started working at the University of Guyana as a professor lecturing in African Studies. The Walter Rodney Memorial Monument is located on Hadfield Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown. The monument was dedicated by Reverend Oslen Small on June 13, 2010, on Rodney’s 30th death anniversary. The monument was built in memory of Rodney’s strength, endurance and his many contributions to the development of Guyana. He was also a member of the Working People’s Alliance (WPA).
