Historical Background / Description:
Hopetown, located on the West Coast of Berbice is located 89 kilometres (55.27 miles) from Georgetown. The village was established by 109 former slaves circa 1840. They paid $2,000.00 for the E half of Plantation Perseverance containing 1 square kilometre (250 acres) of land; the plantation was then renamed Hopetown. In recent years, the village has become known for its annual Soiree which is held during the annual Emancipation celebrations.
