Historical Background / Description:
The Dharm Shala is a humanitarian organisation which was established on April 21, 1921, by Pandit Ramsaroop Maraj who was a descendant of indentured servants. The temple was built by the Dharm Shala in the early 20th century and is located within close proximity to the Canje Bridge at the beginning of New Amsterdam.
Built from timber, the Fort Canje Temple exhibits much fenestration, fretwork, coloured glass panes, front porch and a central tower with spire. The style of the temple has been described as “colonial creole timber architecture”. One unique aspect of this building is that at one time it accommodated the worship of the three main religions in Guyana: Christianity, Islam and Hinduism.
