Historical Background / Description:
The National Park is located with its main entrance on Thomas Road in Thomas Lands, Georgetown. The park occupies approximately 0.23 square kilometres (57 acres) of land and was home to the Demerara Golf Club which was established in 1823. The site was renamed the Queen Elizabeth II National Park in 1965 in honour of the Queen’s visit to Guyana. On May 25, 1966, many gathered at the park to witness the birth of Guyana when the Union Jack was lowered and the Golden Arrow Head hoisted. The name of the park was changed after the country’s achievement of its independence on May 26, 1966.
The National Park is home to a number of monuments such as the Children’s Millennium Monument. The Monument was unveiled in March 2000, and was designed by architect Mr. Michael Hahn. It symbolizes the development, strength and growth of all children of all races in Guyana. There is a children’s park and a small stadium on the lawns of the facility that are used to host a number of cultural and social programmes.
